What are Tanning Beds Bulbs?

Tanning Beds Bulbs which is, usually called as Tanning lamps, are different Tanning devices. One of them is a booth which produces ultraviolet light and it is responsible for Tanning. Tanning Bulbs can be placed or they are placed in a Tanning Booth, some free single standing bulb unit, Tanning bed or Tanning Canopy. Well I have talked about Tan a couple of times so you might be confused that is it that “Sun Tan” then my reply will be No but it is similar to that means it depends upon a band of colours, as seen in a rainbow, produced by separation of the components of light by their different degrees of refraction according to wavelength, that is generated from lamps which are called spectrum of light.

Types of Tanning Bed Bulbs

When talking about Tanning Bulbs there are not ten, twenty, there are hundreds of kinds of Tanning Bulbs but there is a similarity between all of them which is a group, means they can be classified in two basic groups that are Low pressure and High pressure. In an Industrial way, the Low-pressure units are called as “Lamps” and High-pressure as “Bulbs” and are common to call. Also, there are many exceptions and not everyone follows this, that is probably due to the size of the unit instead of their type. Both kinds of lamps require oxygen-free environments to operate.

High-pressure bulbs

The high-pressure units that we call bulbs are 3 to 5 inches long in size and this high-pressure bulbs usually requires a Ballasts to operate which uses 250 to 2,000 watts of power. So, mostly 400-watt power variety come in use means it’s a common one from other high or low watts bulbs. Bulbs or Lamps which are high pressure uses quartz glass and they do not filter UVC. Since UVC can be lethal, therefore a special filter glass called Dichroic filter is needed which will filter out the UVC and UVB rays. The high-pressure bulbs are made and their aim is to only produce a high amount of UVA. From high-pressure bulbs, the light is coming that is unfiltered light which is rich in UVC that is used in germicidal lamps generally for water purification but it has a drawback which is that it damages human skin. In high-pressure Lamps, they contain Argon, which is inert gas and Mercury and no phosphorus is used in it while it is not in the gaseous state you can watch the Mercury clearly.

Low-Pressure Lamps

The Low-pressure units that we call Lamps they need a ballast to start up the lamps because it helps to limit or control the flow of current as like the fluorescent lamps. The ionized gas which contains free electrons and positive ions and are in proportions, and which are typically at low pressures i.e., Plasma of the excited Mercury which is inside the lamps and repeatedly produce UV light directly to your skin. The Lamps are coated with the special phosphorus in their inside. The low-pressure lamps use filtered UVC’s and after that, fully formed plasma strips releases all the electrons from the mercury; and when they return back to a level of lower energy they produce visible UV rays or light.

  • It can burn or redden your skin.
  • It can create a gradual tan.
  • It is good for beginners or lighter skin peoples.
  • It creates a lighter tan but faster.
  • It creates a base tan.
  • It can tan or penetrates only with the top layer of skin.

Some interesting facts –

An electrical ballast is needed to limit or control the amount of flow of current passing through the lamp in Fluorescent tanning lamps while in Incandescent lamps filament the resistance in a characteristics way controls the flow of current inside the lamp but the main interesting part is that tanning lamps do not do that instead they have a negative resistance because they are plasma devices means they pass current as much current provided by the external circuit even it passes current beyond its capacity means self-destruction. So, it needs to be operated through a stabilizer to regulate the flow of current.

What are its uses?

So, after gaining this much info a question may arrive in your mind that, How to use it? Or what are its uses? Then my reply will be simple it is used for tanning our skin it mainly uses those peoples who got naturally very fair skin. Generally, it is used for tanning legs, face, sides or arms; etc but rather than it is also used in treatment like Eczema, Vitiligo, and Psoriasis. If you are very fair skinned then you need to be very careful while tanning because if your skin is light means you are a light-skinned person than there is a chance of burning skin while tanning it is because light-skinned persons do not develop melanin faster as compared to regular hard skinned persons. Though salespersons might not tell you about this you have to keep care of the skin and the main part that you should keep in mind that to avoid lamps that has UVB ratings above 5%. So, for lighter skinned persons a hotter lamp will not work to help you else this will only burn you. So better you look for time means select that lamps which are slower but deeper that is the right choice for lighter skin and choose longer sessions times that has below 5% UVB ratings. And if you have normal or average skin than your skin will not get tan easily and for average skinned people the right choice is 6.5% UVB rating bulbs or might be this also not work on your skin and need hotter than opt for 8.5% UVB rating bulbs.
