What is Feminism? Eliminating wrong notion of Feminism

Feminism…What is feminism? How has it become one of the trending topics of all time? Do people have complete knowledge of it? Questions like these, always raise a topic to discuss. Men, these days are blaming feminism for the ‘unequal’ treatment with them. According to many men, women are not using their right in a correct manner. They claim that women are taking all these rights for granted. They are building this notion that women are misusing their rights and trying to degrade men.

Words like these are often created by the people who establish a false image of Feminism. They see each ‘Feminist‘ as someone who wants to lower the position of men in order to uplift women’s status in the society. But, it’s just their lack of knowledge that they see Feminists as ruthless rebellions who want to conquer the world!

So, it’s necessary for each man as well as woman to have complete knowledge of what actually is Feminism? Let’s read further to grasp more knowledge!

What is Feminism?

Feminism is a social, economical, political and cultural movement which focuses on creating an equal status of women in the society. It aims to give women all their rights to live a life of equality. It expands its coverage on educational as well as professional employment opportunities. Also, the impartment of awareness of rights and knowledge to women to properly use their right are spread by Feminists around the globe. Various institutions are working for helping women succeeding in their lives, all this under the shed of Feminism.

Why Feminism?

Women, from years, have been put in the category of a vulnerable and weak class which can be easily exploited. It was not just restricted to a certain place or a country, it was spread all over the world. Women were defined to led their lives according to the leading male figure. In some countries, women didn’t have basic rights like to own property, to vote or to even study.

What could be worst if you can’t live your life in the way you want? Women were seen as ‘objects,’ who owe their breaths to their male representative. Selling of young girls, killing of girl child or the custom of dowry, whichever way it is, women were exploited at each and every sphere of life. They didn’t have the permission to raise their voice and express freely. Highly, oppressed by the society, women were no less than treated as a mere lifeless doll.

Thus, this movement was the need of the hour to fight against gender inequality.

Emergence of Feminism

The term was initially used in the movie ‘Woman of the year,’ in the year 1942, where  Katherine Hepburn spoke about the “feminist movement.” This brought Feminism into a slight light of popular culture. But it didn’t get much popularity at that time. The emergence of Feminism is divided into Three Parts which are known as:

The Three waves of feminism.

  • Between the period of late 14th and early 15th century, Christine De Pisan, the first feminist philosopher, raised her voice for the much-needed education for women. Afterward, many movements were held to take this wave of Feminism further and accomplish its sole goal of women empowerment.
  • The second wave got its recognition in the year of 1960s and 1970s, in which feminists focused on the civil rights, as basic as equality and justice. It brought the light on the topics like employment discrimination, the unequal salary of men and women for the same work and other security of the jobs to women. Their efforts brought many changes in the laws which provided equal pay for work and equal opportunities of growth. Still, in many countries, women are still less employed and under paid.
  • It is at the end of the 20th century which brought all the feminists of the world together and form a stronger unit. Feminists of America and Europe united with the Asian, Latin American and African Feminists to bring the ultimate gender equality. Feminists studied the situation of the world and they got to know the more horrifying acts practiced upon women, which includes widow burning, child marriage, and female genital cutting. The movement became more strong and aimed to finish all these evil practices.

Feminism Today…

Feminism is a worldwide phenomenon today. It is gaining more popularity because of the digital age. Social media is proving to be one of the most powerful tools for women to express their views. A Feminist is not necessarily required to be a woman, men can be feminists too. Anyone who wants an equal status of women and no gender discrimination becomes a feminist.

Feminists got success in many countries. The situation of women is far better than what it used to be. All this is happening because women stood for their empowerment. The problem is, women still get judgments on their looks, clothes and even on their work profile. No matter, how much intelligent a woman is or how successful she is, society still demands her to excel in household chores to get the label of ideal women. Though these things still disturb women mentally, they are flying high to become a woman of substance.

Correcting the wrong notion of Feminism

What’s more disturbing is that when women are struggling to get their basic rights in the society, men are claiming women to be selfish! What men need to understand that Feminism does not demand on their degradation, instead Feminism wants an equal world. Feminism is a movement which aims to diminish the stereotypes roles assigned to gender. Why a man can’t take care of the house the way a woman do? Why can’t a woman run a whole empire of business the way a man do? Society is living upon these differences from ages!

Since birth, girls and boys get different teachings on how they should be. Girls in the society have to be polite, gentle. mature and beautiful. But boys can lead a carefree rough tough life. Feminism want all these notions to take a backseat and desire to build the world where there are equal opportunities for all! Feminism has come a long way but it still has to go long way. Till then, be a strong Feminist!

Very interesting to read the history side, I think the word ‘feminism’ gets a bad rap and is used most often in almost a derogatory way. When what all women want is to be treated fair and equal.

    • WomenLite

That’s true. I was very frustrated about how some people just bash Feminists for everything bad happening with men. So, thought to clear the view of Feminism.

This is a great explanation of feminism! Women in the past have fought so hard (and some lost their lives) for us to have the rights we have nowadays. It breaks my heart so see how many women ignore their rights or even kick them down right with their feet 🙁

    • WomenLite

Yeah, that’s true. It’s because of those brave heart women that we’re living a better life. Still, a lot has to change and more awareness has to be spread.

    Better Comment Option 🙂
As for the post, reading the history was interesting. Though I know and understand what you mean and how men think of it, I think there are social feminist groups who depict a misleading picture as well. This post should help many to know what Feminism is all about.

    • WomenLite

I got your point. This was for everyone who doesn’t the actual meaning of Feminism. I also mentioned that each man, as well as woman, should know the reality of it.

Insightful post I must say. However, sometimes this feminism movement is taken too radically. And I see some kinda ‘extreme feminists’.
Women for sure have been oppressed over the years, some young girls aren’t sent to school, those who are opportuned to go, aren’t paid same wages as their male counterparts in the same role. Widows are being ill-treated, domestic abuse, etc Thus feminism seeks to eradicate all these and it’s a positive development.
At home, it is seen that the duty of a woman is to cook, clean and take care of the home while the man does nothing but eat and poo.
Even though both the man/woman work to feed the home.
I would like to look at this movement from the positive side as everyone deserves equal respect but also, I think there is hierarchy in all aspects of life. In government, schools, etc so I’d like to see the man as the head of the family.
Conclusively, everyone men/women alike deserve equal respect and should be treated so.

I love your point of view! Very well written and worded. The fact that you have a great relationship site we should partner up! Thank you for shining some light on this topic! 🙂

I know how this may sound but I never really understood feminism I’m not sure why I just couldn’t ever get into the topic or understand it.

  • Nessy

The lack of equal pay is still a big thing. But look at how in some countries women still can’t even drive cars. We’re not done yet.

Have you ever watched the documentary about “It’s A Girl” it’s about gendercide, and it’s an amazing and worthy documentary to watch. It’s on Netflix and about discrimination against having girls in general. The weaker and more unwanted gender, like boys, are more favorable to have. It goes back through generations and generations and different cultures as well.

    • WomenLite

Thank you for suggesting this, the plot seems really interesting to watch. I’ll surely watch it! Also. I think I can write about that too, at least I can give a try!

  • Mercy (Zen Maud)

You’re right, the world and most societies, if not all, have a long way to go in acknowledging that women and other genders are just as human and as similar as men. And that we all deserve respect.

  • Jade Braham

This is an amazing post! so inspiring! I’ve always been interested in feminism – I think it is essential that equality is achieved! I’m a huge history buff so knowing how women were treated back then and how in some places they are still treated that way I think that if we can we should change that 🙂
