In the past, Legian, Kuta and Seminyak took all the spotlight when people came to Bali. However, travellers are starting to explore more of the island, and more areas are becoming popular and well-developed, and amongst them is Canggu. What used to be a quaint, sleepy village has blossomed into a vibrant town with lots of cafes, shops and activities.
And yet, Canggu still preserves a laid-back, easy-going vibe that attracts many surfers, yogis, and travelers in general. Wanting to check out this area but not sure what to do? This article will be your guide.
Canggu coastline stretches for 8 kilometers and boasts several nice beaches: Berawa, Nelaya, Batu Bolong, Echo and more. The beaches in Canggu as known for their high waves, hence, this town is very popular amongst surfers of all levels. If you are looking to conquer the waves, head to Echo Beach and Batu Bolong. If you prefer a more quiet setting and calmer waters, check out Nelayan Beach. And if you love a good beach club, Berawa Beach is the perfect place.
If you are up for something new, check out Bali Equestrian Center. Boasting a vast area surrounded by green rice fields and Balinese villages, Bali Equestrian Center is home to 30 hours. Here, you can get to try horseback riding. If you are already experienced, you can take the horse to explore the surrounding or ride along the beach. The center also has a kids playground, a pool and a restaurant, so it’s a great place to check out if you are coming with kids.

You can’t leave Bali without visiting some of the island’s most significant cultural aspect, a temple. Thankfully, you can easily visit Tanah Lot when you are staying in Canggu. Sitting on a rock in the ocean, the temple is solemnly gorgeous. While it’s possible to visit throughout the day, the best time (and also most crowded time) is at sunset when you are treated to a glorious, magical show in the sky.
If you are in Canggu over the weekend, be sure to check out the Sunday markets where you can have an enjoyable shopping experience. Some of the markets to put on your list are Samadi (unique island gifts, organic food and homemade bread) and Love Anchor (clothes, dream catchers, rattan bags and more). It’s nice to stroll through the markets, check out some items and then relax at a stylish cafe afterwards.
Probably one of the most popular hangout spots in Canggu, Old Man’s attracts many tourists and expats living in Bali. It’s a beachfront beer garden where you can kick back, relax and enjoy some ice-cold beer. Their burgers and tidbits are addictive and will keep you coming back for more! Every Wednesday, the place becomes extra-fun with live bands and DJs. A great experience indeed!
