3 Bad Cleaning Habits Holding You Back

Even though home cleaning is something most people don’t enjoy and aren’t shy admitting. Still having a clean home is a necessity if you want to live your life in a clean and healthy environment.

Putting off cleaning for the very last moment is a strategy employed by many of those who are reluctant to clean their homes. However, that is not an ideal situation. You will need to do a rush job and probably miss a few important things.

Bad Cleaning Habits Holding You Back

That’s why we reached out to cleaning experts to give us some pointers on how to ditch bad cleaning habits and how to make cleaning more streamlined and interesting.

Post-Shower Routines

Do you know what happens to your shower curtain once you leave the shower? Chances are that you don’t since most people don’t think about it. However, more often than not, we leave the shower curtain bunched up and folded while it’s still wet. And that makes for an ideal environment for mold and mildew growth – warm, wet, and dark (once you leave the bathroom).

The same goes for your towel. If you leave it on the ground and bunched up while it is still wet, you risk having mold and mildew in your bathroom. The solution is simple for both of these – simply spread the shower curtain and hang your towel to dry. The faster they dry, the less likely mold and mildew are.

Vacuuming Routines

Vacuuming is one of those chores that people hate the most – and it makes sense. You need to bend over and push a vacuum cleaner, covering every inch of your home with a small pad – it can really take a long time.

However, don’t underplay the importance of vacuuming. It picks up a lot of dust and other particles which are not healthy for you to breathe in, and may serve as breeding grounds for various pathogens.

If you vacuum your home at least once every two weeks, that’s fine, although once a week would be better. If you’re not, you’d better start.

While we’re on the subject of vacuuming, empty your vacuum bag at least every second time you use the vacuum cleaner. The bag fills up with dust and debris and may not be able to take in any new trash, making any subsequent vacuuming pointless.

Of course, if you have a robot vacuum cleaner, you can disregard this whole section and enjoy your time in Tomorrowland.

Dish Washing Routines

I know I’m guilty of this one. Whenever I don’t feel like doing the dishes right away, I will say something like ‘I’ll just leave them to soak a bit’. Even though this notion used to make sense, before the non-stick pans and Teflon cutlery and crockery, nowadays most of our dishes are good to go very quickly. That means this is just an excuse not to wash the dishes right now. Or today… or tomorrow.

And just keep in mind that the dirty dishes in the kitchen sink present the perfect environment for bacteria to grow – lots of organic waste and water.

The simplest way to resolve this issue, according to home cleaning experts, is to do the dishes right away. However, most people don’t do it, which means that you need to create a routine, a special time of day when you will do the dishes – and stick to it.

Fridge and Food Routines

Having a well-stocked fridge sounds great – having all kinds of food and drinks at your disposal at any time sounds like a dream. And it can be, for the most part.

One of the most important lessons to learn about shopping and especially food shopping is quantity management. Be sure that you have enough food to last you until the next shopping trip, but don’t overdo it.

This applies especially to fresh produce which can go bad quite quickly. If your family needs a dozen bananas a week, don’t buy 2 or 3 dozen just because they are on a discount or just because you can – they will spoil and you will have to throw them away. And if you forget, the smells and the mess rotten produce can make is quite unpleasant.
