7 Storage Solutions for When Your Garage Is Cluttered

For many people, the garage is a lost cause and a constant cause of frustration. It’s true, the garage is often a cluttered area into which homeowners will discard items and leave them to gather dust while creating an unwanted eyesore in the home.

Just as importantly, whether you plan to work from the garage or not, this could be another part of the home in which you can turn a forgotten space into a useful area.

In this article, we take a look at some of the most useful storage solutions for the garage. As you will see, these are also affordable options and simple installations that will keep everything organized and remove this unnecessary frustration from the mind. You should also consider garage repair for smooth working.

Now, let’s take a look at some storage solutions to help you declutter the garage…

Storage Solutions for When Your Garage Is Cluttered

Use Tool Racks to Keep the Floor Clear

Random tools and boxes lying on the floor are little more than accidents waiting to happen. However, by lining the walls with a tool rack, you have a simple solution that will keep these tools entirely out of the way. What’s more, these tool racks come in all shapes and sizes which means you can even find small versions that will hold smaller items such as hammers and screwdrivers.

But what if you don’t have many tools?

Well, you clearly have a lot of “stuff” so let’s consider another option that requires even less effort in terms of installation…

Build Shelving to Make the Most of Vertical

While most garages will have quite a bit of floor space, there is most often a decent level of vertical space, too. In other words, you can usually fit a lot more than tool racks up against the wall and shelving is the obvious solution.

Also, shelving is usually a lot easier and affordable to install, while the shelves will often provide more space than the like of our tool rack mentioned above. And as if that’s not enough, shelving can be very attractive which might not be the purpose here, but it always helps!

And that’s just part of the story…

Hoist and Overhead Hangers

You can also use the garage ceiling for storage. It’s true, a hoist can be used to store items on the ceiling and many homeowners use this option to keep bicycles out of the way. That being said, a hoist is most suited to holding light items and needs to be kept away from any door openings to prevent interference. In case you might be asking yourself, do you have any skis or boating oars that need to be stored away?

Deploy a Corner Storage Unit to Maximize Every Inch

Have you heard about corner storage units? As you might expect, these units are specifically designed for the corner of your garage. For instance, you can buy corner storage units that hold gardening tools. Simply put, these tools can be just clipped into small brackets or slotted down in the stable openings in the unit. Given the compact nature of a corner unit, you can always fit way more items into a corner than usual.

Hang a Coat Rack in the Garage

Once again, this might sound obvious but most garages do not have a coat rack. When you think of it, the garage is the perfect place to hang overalls, rain jackets and other coats or items that you may not use all year round.

These racks are also extremely easy to install and can hold multiple items at the same time. It’s also very convenient to have a coat rack in the garage, for when wet, it makes far more sense to hang these items in the garage rather than allowing them to drop all over the interior of the home.

Use Deck Boxes to Keep Everything Compact

A decent deck box will not only keep everything out of the way but also in a compact space. That is to say, when boxing items, you can always fit more bulk into a small space. Also, deck boxes will protect items from gathering mold, while keeping out any pesky bugs or mites.

Labeling these boxes ensures these items are easier to find in the future and the affordable prices makes them an obvious choice for homeowners. And if you want to make life even easier, opaque/clear boxes mean that you can actually see what you have stored without having to open the boxes.

On the other hand, maybe you want something fancier? In which case, some boxes are more decorative and you can even use wooden boxes for something more authentic.

Opt for Rectangular Bins Rather than Rounded Containers

Now, we all know the importance of keeping the house clean. But believe it or not, rounded bins or storage containers cannot hold the same amount of items as those which are rectangular. It might sound obvious but many homeowners will make this mistake without a second thought.

What’s more, these containers will usually take up more space or at least the same amount of space. In other words, rounded bins tend to “stick out” and need to be placed more strategically in the garage. And just so you know, even if these boxes have wheels, you will most often still need to move them around and line them up in order to squeeze them into a suitable spot.

Final Thoughts

Storage areas such as the garage are surprisingly tricky to organize. For this reason, the garage is most of them the most cluttered or messy room in the home. Most often, this is also the last resort for items and even what you might consider a “dumping ground”.

However, with the above solutions, there is always a way to turn a messy garage into a functional space that looks just as nice as any other room in the home.
