Spring is on its way and that itch to clean and tidy might be coming up on you again. That or maybe you’ve been watching too much Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix, and her joy for clearing clutter has gotten to you. Either way, many people will be stretching out their limbs and getting to work on removing all the dust and dirt that’s built up in and outside their homes over the winter months.
It’s just such a great and refreshing feeling to rejuvenate your home and bring it back to life. It’s a good change for both your body and your mental health.
Not sure where to start? That’s not an uncommon problem, especially if you’re new to home ownership. What exactly needs to get done, and what’s the best way to go about cleaning? Here are some great home maintenance tips to get your home ready for spring and summer.
There’s no way you’re going to get anything done if there’s too much clutter in your home. With so much stuff in the way, you won’t really be doing much to make your home any more clean and tidy if you’re just going to keep the same old junk around.
Gather up old and unwanted items like clothes you never wear, books, toys, and random knick-knacks that you have hanging around. Sort what you’ve collected in piles for donating, recycling, garbage, or storage, and make sure that those piles get moved out to their intended destination!
This therapeutic exercise will make you feel great and already make your home look cleaner.
A good rule of thumb when cleaning is to start from your ceiling and then work your way down towards the floor. Doing this is efficient because as you clean items that are higher up, dust and dirt will fall to the floor, meaning you’ll only have to vacuum and/or mop once, instead of twice if you did it the other way around.
Make sure that you are dusting your ceiling, walls, corners, and baseboards, as these are oftenculprits for dust accumulation.
Want to get more light into your home? The winter months may have taken their toll on your home windows by flinging dirt, debris, and snow onto the glass. Mixing up a vinegar window washing solution will work on any kind of window, whether you have vinyl windows or aluminum windows – this all-natural solution will quickly dissolve all manner of dirt.
There are a few different ways to create a vinegar window-washing solution, but they all mainly involve mixing water and vinegar in a bucket or spray bottle, applying the solution to the glass surface, and then gently wiping it away with a sponge. You might be surprised to see how well the vinegar solution works, especially because it doesn’t leave annoying streaks behind.
If you want to get the best results from the cleaning materials used, purchasing good quality window cleaning tools is the way to go.
Spring cleaning has been around for generations, so there’s a lot of knowledge out there about best-practices. Check out some videos online for more tips on how to get your home into tip-top shape just in time for spring.
Spring cleaning is always a good time to take care of the appliances in your home, especially some of the appliances that don’t usually get checked on. Beyond cleaning the fridge, making sure you change your furnace filter is a big one, along with the usual HVAC checkups. For those with hard water (or if you’re thinking about buying a new water softener) this is a great time of year to make a switch.
Take the give your home some love this spring and let the fresh air in!
