A Dream Wedding In Indonesia

Walk on tropical beaches are white sands, blue sea, and gorgeous coral reefs. The island is very spiritual and you will see religious sites, temples, and cathedrals. Bali is also home to some of the most luxurious resorts with perfect wedding venues.

Not your typical American Wedding

legal documents

Getting married in Indonesia has many legal requirements that you do not find in America. It is essential that you have a qualified wedding planner that is experienced and from the area. While it is not illegal not to have a wedding planner, she will know the rules and regulations that the law requires.

Do your research. There are scam artists that prey on people coming from other countries. Your lack of knowledge makes you a prime target. Research your wedding planner. How long have they been in business? Do they have connections with the vendors you will need in the country? Ask for references.

Things you need to know

wedding gown

It is a mistake to travel to Indonesia expecting to find a bridal gown with the professionals to make alterations in time for a wedding. This is not a quick process. Instead buy your wedding gown here and take it with you in your carry on luggage. Azazie has beautiful white wedding gowns that travel well.

Negotiate everything. Never say you are planning a wedding when you inquire, Simply ask for a quote on venues, suites, flowers, and caterers. If you mention it’s a wedding, expect the price to double.

Do not prepay for your venue, flowers, or anything else. Request installments. This gives you some control over what they deliver.

Be sure you ask a lot of questions. Some hotels and wedding locations have contracts that require you to use their caterer, photographer, and bakery. If you book one of these locations, you have little choice over the quality or even number of options available to you. Do not sign anything unless you are certain it is what you are agreeing to. Again, your wedding planner can save you this hassle.

The Law

  • To get married in Indonesia, you must have two ceremonies. You must have a civil ceremony and a religious ceremony. They must be on the same day. You must declare your religion before the weddings take place and if you are Catholic (Christian) you must be married in a Catholic church. The Indonesian government recognizes most major religions, including:
  • Islam
  • Buddhism
  • Catholic
  • Christianity
  • Hinduism

Required documents

passport keeping

  • Passports
  • Birth certificates
  • 4x6cm photographs, minimum of four
  • A letter from the representative of your Embassy stating their non-objection of your wedding taking place in Indonesia

The fun part

Once you get through the red tape you can proceed with having your weddings on this beautiful island. The double ceremonies give you an opportunity to have an outdoor beach wedding and an indoor wedding and celebration. Note: Muslims are not required to have their religious wedding in a Mosque. That only applies to Catholics, but there are many beautiful religious temples, churches, and Mosques if that is your preference.

Having your wedding in Indonesia may be tedious, but the results are breathtaking. People gladly go through these unusual requirements just to have the luxury that a place like Bali affords them. This is a wedding experience above all others. Just proceed with caution, but by all means, proceed.
